Big Plans Brewing for Our Backyard

I have dreams of having a beautiful backyard that we spend hours in. When we moved into our new-to-us old home, the garden was beautiful. But there was A LOT of it. We’ve been slowly scaling it back and creating more play space in the backyard. I’ll be the first to admit that I do not have a green thumb and gardening intimidates me. But this spring I have been making more of an effort to start weeding early and get things under control. The big motivating factor lately has been that I am hosting a bridal shower at my house for 20 ladies which has motivated me to make our front yard look nice. Nothing like a little bit of social pressure to get you moving!

The basement renovation we did this past fall has used up our reno budget for the year so we will have to get creative on how to clean up the yard on a budget. Our deck needs a complete overhaul but I am trying to figure out how to make it nice in the meantime. We plan spending a lot of time in our backyard this summer and I am choosing to focus on what I love about our yard.

Our start:

  • Powerwashing the driveway, front steps, garden boxes

  • Powerwashed under the deck

  • Major weeding in the front yard, going to do back yard

Plans:

  • New BBQ

  • Firetable on deck?

  • Stain the deck as a temporary fix

  • Paint a mural with the girls on the unsightly plywood

2 year plan:

  • New deck and railing, create closed storage under deck

  • Cleaned up garden beds with bark mulch to keep weeds under control

  • Create a patio space in our front yard to enjoy afternoon sun

Here are some inspiration pics of what I dream our front yard sun area could be designed after:

When it comes to home rennovation plans it is important to be patient and kind to yoursef. Enjoy what you have as life gets busy (and expensive!) and your plans will come together. Give yourself generous timelines and permission to enjoy your space now. I'd love to hear your backyard plans, feel free to comment below!

Hi Sheri! It's so awesome for you to share your projects and knowledge with us! I just bought and moved into my 18 year old townhouse last summer, and I'm excited to spend lots of time in the backyard (faces west, yay) enjoying my home and the sun. I'm learning about gardening (fingers crossed I might get 1 bloom for my peony plant) and we just finished building the new patio furniture. We are trying to fix up the bare patches grass of the tiny lawn, and for the garden, hopefully it will become a thriving veggie garden. There is still lots to do for the inside of the unit to freshen things up, but I look forward to reading…
