Facing Your DIY Fears this Halloween

Spooky season is here and I don’t know about you but I have definitely been spooked by DIY projects. The fear of failure, the fear of waiting time and money are very real. So how do we overcome the fear of attempting DIY projects? I don’t pretend to have all the answers but I want to share what I have learned about working through the fear of failure and DIYs.

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

I think so often we are afraid to look foolish that we don’t ask questions from people who have done it before. I have asked so many basic obvious questions (and still do) while I was learning. My Dad has done a lot of renovations and has definitely been the recipient of a lot of my questions. A great resource is DIY groups on facebook which are great, helpful forums. I have even gone to home depot and asked questions as well. And of course, ask me and I will help! I believe that teamwork makes the dream-work, as cheesy as that sounds.

  1. Do the project scared anyways

The feel of failure and being intimidated is an indication that you really care about the  project. So lean into that. Take your time and ask for help when you need it.

  1. Break the project into small steps

Looking at a project as a whole can feel very intimidating but when you break it down into smaller actionable steps you will feel less overwhelmed and it will be more doable.

  1. Give yourself grace!

You are trying something new, and chances are it won’t all work out exactly as planned but you will learn a lot and with hard work and asking for help you will come to an outcome you are happy with. Embrace the journey and give yourself grace along the way.

I know these tips come across a little woo-woo but mindset plays a really big role in DIY’s (and life in general). I know from personal experience that every time I have had a negative attitude towards a project it never goes well, but when I take a break and come back with a fresh positive mindset the process is more enjoyable and goes better.

Do you have any strategies you would like to share? I am all ears :).

Happy DIY’ing!
