How to Make Your Home Feel Like Summer (Even on Gloomy Days)

Updated: Jul 3

Here on the West Coast, we know that summer doesn’t always mean sunshine. Some days start with promise but end with cloud cover, misty air, and the kind of chill that makes you question if it’s really June (or July… or August). But I’ve found a few tricks to bring that summer feeling inside — even when the skies say otherwise.

Here’s how I cozy up our space to keep the summer spirit going, no matter the weather forecast:

1. Swap in Lighter Textiles

I stash away the chunky throws and dark pillows and bring out light linens, cotton throws, and breezy pillow covers in warm whites, soft blues, and natural tones. Even if it’s cool outside, lighter fabrics make the house feel like summer.

🛋 Try layering a neutral gauzy throw over your couch or bed — it adds texture without bulk.

2. Bring the Outdoors In

Can’t lounge outside? Bring the greenery inside. I like to have fresh flowers (peonies are my favourite right now) and fresh herbs on the counter always help keep things fresh. They smell like summer and add a pop of green that brightens the whole room.

🌿 Bonus: Mint in a vase near the sink = an instant mood booster every time you pass by.

3. Lean into Summer Scents

Scent plays a big role in creating atmosphere. On dreary days, I’ll diffuse essential oils like citrus, coconut, or eucalyptus to give the illusion of warmth and sunshine — even if I’m still wearing a hoodie indoors.

4. Have an indoor Dance Party

Summer isn’t just about what you see — it’s also about what you hear. Music has a way of instantly uplifting mood. We’ll play laid back country or 2000’s pop to have a fun dance party with the girls.

5. Have a “Summer Inside” Moment

When we can’t be outside, I make it an occasion to do something summery inside. We’ll make our own pizza, have freezies, and us adults may have a glass of wine or beer. The goal is to keep the atmosphere bright and fun.

Final Thoughts

Living on the coast means summer comes in waves — sometimes sunny, sometimes socked in. But I’ve learned that creating a summery atmosphere inside makes all the difference. With a few small shifts, your home can feel warm, breezy, and bright, no matter what it looks like outside.

What are your favorite ways to make your house feel like summer — even when the weather says otherwise?
