Have you ever felt like your creativity just… shut off?
Like your motivation is at an all-time low and no matter how hard you try, nothing feels inspired?
I’ve been there recently.
The last few months have been heavy in our home. My husband has been waiting for cervical spine surgery and has been in constant pain for five months. He had surgery yesterday and thank goodness, he is doing well and recovering but leading up to it, my medical brain was working overtime.
As a respiratory therapist, I understand too much sometimes. My mind was constantly running through possibilities, risks, recovery timelines. And even though I tried to stay grounded, the stress quietly drained me.
Last week, I didn’t record a podcast episode.
Not because I didn’t care. Not because I’m quitting. But because I had nothing left in the tank.
And maybe you’ve felt that too.

When Stress Is High, Creativity Drops
I’ve noticed something about myself over the years:
When my stress level rises, my creativity falls.
And I don’t think I’m alone in that.
As busy women, especially moms, we carry a mental load that most people don’t see. When life adds an extra layer of stress (health concerns, work pressure, world events, family responsibilities), our nervous systems go into protection mode.
And creativity? That requires safety. Space. Margin.
So if you’ve been feeling uninspired lately, please hear this:
There is nothing wrong with you.
You are likely just overloaded.
So How Do We Move Through Creative Burnout?
Here’s what I’ve found helpful during seasons when inspiration feels far away:
1. Acknowledge the Feeling
Instead of fighting it, name it.
Overwhelm.Anxiety.Burnout.Exhaustion.
There is something powerful about simply saying, “I feel drained.”
When we stop resisting the feeling, it loses some of its intensity.
2. Take a Break (Walks Are Magic)
If you’re in the middle of a home project, work task, or creative pursuit --pause.
Go outside.
Walk.
There is something about fresh air, trees, and movement that resets everything. Living here on the West Coast of British Columbia, I’m constantly reminded how grounding nature can be. The ocean. The trees. The quiet.
It regulates your nervous system in a way scrolling never will.
3. Talk About It
Talk to your partner.Call a friend.Text someone who gets it.
Sometimes just voicing what you’re carrying helps it pass through instead of staying stuck inside you.
We were never meant to process stress alone.
4. Start Again Slowly
When you’re ready, don’t leap back in at full speed.
Take one small creative step.
Organize your tools.Choose a paint swatch.Write one paragraph.Sketch an idea.
Do what feels light and even a little fun.
Momentum doesn’t have to be dramatic. It can be gentle.
Why It Still Matters to Keep Going
Life feels hard for a lot of us right now.
But I truly believe this:
We have to keep doing the things that bring us joy.
Not in a hustle way.Not in a pressure-filled way.
But in a life-giving way.
Creativity makes us feel alive. Whether that’s painting a wall, rearranging a room, learning to patch drywall, or simply dreaming about what could be.
When we nurture that spark, even in small ways, it benefits not only us but our families too.
Because a fulfilled, energized mom changes the atmosphere of a home.
If You’re Feeling Stuck Right Now
If you’re in a creative block…If your motivation is low…If life feels heavier than usual…
You are not behind, you are not failing. You are human.
Take a breath. Take a Walk. Talk it out. Start small.
From one DIYer to another,
Find your joy. 💛
