Purple Walls & Pink Dreams: A Summer Painting Project Win

Well, I did it- I accomplished the goal I hoped to do at the beginning of the summer: be present with my kids and complete two painting projects. It was definitely down to the wire with me finishing the painting at the end of the labour day long weekend. But it’s done and I’m so pleased.

I set out to paint the girls’ bedroom and finish the painting needed in Matt’s office. Back in December 2024, when we had our downstairs reno done we also removed the valences in the upstairs living room and bedrooms (all the info is in a previous blog post). But with the school year in full swing, and the business of life, time flew and before I knew it summer vacation started and the rooms were still in disarray.

The "BEFORE" - excuse the mess but the you can see the paint needed!

Here is a breakdown of how I tackled this project:

Day 1: I started with caulking and filling holes on the walls and covering nail holes over our new valence boxes. I washed the walls, and put on a coat of primer. It took most of the day and was a lot of work!

Day 2: I had decided on the pink for the girls room (Pink Swirl By Benjamin Moore) and was going to do the other two walls in White Dove (also BM). But the girls really wanted a bright purple wall. Through talking to them I had this realization that their room is their room. Now, I know that sounds obvious but I got carried away with how stylish I could make their room look instead of making it exactly what they wanted. So, I went back to BM, picked out a bright pastel purple and off I went. For the first time ever I painted a wall without color testing it first. And lucky me, it all worked out nicely!

By the end of Day 2 I was able to complete the first coat in their bedroom and in Matt’s office.

Day 3 (Saturday of the long weekend): I painted the second coat of each color and painted the trim in their room. Even though this was the last coat, it took 4 hours.

Day 3- painted trim and started to organize again

Day 4: I put the room back together and the girls are so happy!

The purple I used in their room is Pale Iris, the pink is pink swirl by Benjamin Moore. I used an egg shell finish for both paints.

It felt so good to complete this project and to give their room a good clean before the chaos of the school routine. This project also became a good reminder for me of my “WHY” for home renovations. My WHY is to create a cozy, happy home for OUR family. Not for the people who may buy it someday if we decide to sell, but for US right now in this moment. And that meant bright purple walls instead of white. So worth it!

Have you ever got carried away like I have with a project? I’d love to hear your stories and feedback!
