Reflecting on how far we have come

This past weekend I hosted a bridal shower for my future sister-in-law. I did a high tea theme which turned out really beautiful (there will be a blog post coming on this topic). But as I was welcoming the guests (most of which I hadn’t met before) and was told how lovely the shower and my home was I found myself reflecting on how far we have come.

My aunts came to the shower as well and it was really nice to show them all the updates we have done since they were last over. I really found myself talking positively about my home and feeling very proud of our home. It was a nice feeling! When we first moved in 2.5 years ago feeling this way about our home seemed like a long way off. We felt so overwhelmed by how many projects we had to make the house feel like ours. But now after consistently working through our checklists we have created a home that we are proud of.

Here is a breakdown of what I have learned:

  • Create a list of DIY projects and decide which is most important to finish first for quality of life

  • Little changes make a big impact! I started painting one room at a time and slowly but surely the home felt like ours

  • For an old home, air fresheners are key to get rid of the old house smell.

  • Also just bringing in our furniture helped the space feel updated

  • Find several things you enjoy about your home NOW and remember those when you feel overwhelmed by how many projects you have going on

Our experience of moving into an old home and updating it as we live in it has taught us so much. It really is possible to work fulltime, raise your kids with intention, and update your home to create a space you are proud of. It takes patience, making a realistic plan, and working as a team to tackle your projects one by one. You will get there, I promise!
