With summer right around the corner, I have big plans to complete several painting projects. The summer heat that I love so much does add some complications to painting. In today's post, I want to share some tips and tricks for painting in summer heat. It is also helpful for me to write about these as good reminders before I start my DIY projects. There's something about the longer days and sunhsine pouring in that makes summer painting extra satisfying. So whether you're planning to paint a bedroom like me or maybe a piece of furniture, here are some tried and true tips for keeping your summer painting projects running smoothy.
1. Paint Early (or Late) in the Day
Skip the midday sun. I’ve found the best time to paint is early morning or early evening when temps are cooler and the light is still good. Not only will you feel better, but your paint will dry more evenly without the blazing sun speeding up the process too much.

2. Check the Temperature Range on Your Paint Can
Most latex and acrylic paints perform best between 10°C–30°C (50°F–85°F). If it’s too hot, paint can dry too fast, leading to streaks and visible brush marks. If you’re painting outside, aim for a day that’s warm but not scorching.

3. Avoid Painting in Direct Sunlight
Paint in the shade whenever possible. Direct sun on your surface can make the paint tacky in minutes, which is a recipe for roller lines, clumps, and frustration. If you're working outdoors, plan your project around the sun’s position—or bring out the patio umbrella!
4. Watch the Humidity
High humidity can slow down drying time, especially for indoor projects with poor ventilation. A dehumidifier or fan can help if you're working indoors, while outdoor projects benefit from drier forecast days.
5. Store Paint & Supplies Properly
Keep your paint cans and rollers in a shaded, cool area—not baking on the driveway while you work. Paint left in the heat can change consistency, which makes your job harder (ask me how I know 😅).
6. Stay Hydrated & Take Breaks
This one might sound obvious, but when you're in project-mode, it’s easy to forget. Keep water nearby, wear breathable clothes, and take mini breaks in the shade. Your body (and your paint lines) will thank you.

7. Opt for Quick-Dry or Low-VOC Paints
Warm weather is a great time to use low-VOC paints because you can ventilate your space easily. Some quick-dry formulas are designed for warm conditions and reduce waiting time between coats—win-win.
