Feature Walls You Can Finish in a Weekend

One of the quickest ways to add character and warmth to a space is with a feature wall. Whether you choose rustic wood planks for texture or a bold paint colour for drama, a feature wall can completely transform your room in just a weekend.

I’ve created both styles in my own home: one with distressed planks in our townhouse and another using paint in our current living room, and I can tell you each brought something unique to the space. The best part? Both can be tackled in a weekend with the right plan.

Below, I’ll share what I learned from each project so you can decide which style is right for your home.

Step One: Choose the Right Wall

No matter which route you take, the first decision is where to put your feature wall.

  • Look for a wall that naturally draws attention—behind your sofa, a bed, or framing a fireplace or console table.

  • Choose one with limited interruptions (like windows or vents) for the most impact.

  • Consider lighting—natural or added sconces will make colour and texture stand out beautifully.

Option 1: A Rustic Plank Wall

If you love warmth, texture, and a rustic aesthetic, wood planks are a fantastic option.

Materials & Prep

  • Rustic planks (ours were from Home Depot)

  • Brad nails + nail gun

  • Wood glue

  • Dark paint for the background

  • Caulking

Before you start, check for plumbing and wiring with a stud finder. We learned this the hard way after hitting a pipe with brad nails—so take it from me, this step is non-negotiable.

Also, paint the wall a dark shade first. Gaps will appear over time as wood expands and contracts, and the dark background helps them blend in naturally.

Installation

  • Work from the bottom up.

  • Use wood glue and brad nails to secure the planks. Visible nails can add charm if you’re going for a rustic feel.

  • Once the planks are up, use caulking to clean up edges and make the wall look intentional and polished.

Styling

Keep the furniture simple so the wall remains the star. I decorated ours with a eucalyptus wreath to add colour and freshness.

Option 2: A Bold Painted Wall

If wood planks feel like too much commitment, paint is a budget-friendly, high-impact option.

Choosing a Color

  • Pick something that contrasts but complements your existing palette.

  • Darker shades (like my choice of Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron) create depth and drama, especially against neutral walls.

  • Tie in accents: pillows, rugs, or artwork. These should compliment the wall colour for balance.

Painting Tips

  • Use a primer before applying your feature color.

  • Plan for 2–3 coats, especially if you’re painting over a light base.

  • A satin finish adds subtle shine and durability.

Our wall took 3 coats and cost about $140 in paint and supplies. In just 4.5 hours, the transformation was complete.

Lighting & Decor

Lighting makes a huge difference. A wall sconce or lamp will prevent the color from feeling too heavy. I paired ours with a battery-operated sconce from Amazon and loved how it softened the space.

When styling, choose art and décor that compliment your feature wall. A bold wall pairs well with minimal décor, while a solid painted wall can shine with framed art, shelving, or a gallery wall of family photos.

Final Touches for Either Style

  • Furniture placement: A sofa, console, or bed against the wall will naturally highlight it.

  • Personal touches: Display family photos, travel souvenirs, or artwork that feels like you.

  • Budget wisely: DIY saves money but takes patience; hiring help speeds things up but costs more.

  • Maintenance: Keep extra paint or planks for touch-ups, dust regularly, and protect wood finishes with sealant.

Lessons Learned

  • Be bold: paint can always be repainted, and planks can be removed.

  • Prep is everything: checking for wiring, using primer, and painting a dark base color all save future headaches.

  • Lighting makes or breaks a feature wall. Plan for it early.

  • Simplicity in surrounding décor helps your wall stand out without overwhelming the space.
